La Font du Vent Côtes du Rhône Rouge Les Promesses 2007 (Rhône Valley, France)

This
Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault blend is produced by Gonnet Pères & Fils, a
family-owned estate based in Châteauneuf du Pape, who identified this terraced
vineyard as showing great ‘promise’.
The 25 year-old vines are organically tended and picked by hand from a
site on the right bank of the Rhône, close to the Pont du Gard (the Roman
aqueduct), near Provence. The vineyard sits on rounded pebbles (that retain
their heat at night), clay and sandy marl, on a slope that promotes cooling
breezes (la Font du Vent means ‘spring of the wind’). It has a bountiful, berry-filled nose,
showing dark cherry and blood plum and blackberry bramble. Following on the
palate, there are high, sweet notes of mint, tempered by earthy spice, smoky
bacon, finely structured tannins and excellent acidity.
